La La Land

La La Land is a beautiful romantic musical drama. Set in the booming city of Los Angles, the movie is about the relationship between two aspiring artists. A series of chance encounters push actress Mia, played by Emma Stone, and Jazz pianist Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, together. Passionate about their professions they soon fall in love. Both are driven by similar goals but their diverging careers soon cause them to reconsider what is most important in their lives.

The chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling is very strong. They excellently portray the strengths and the flaws of the relationship. They show the sad reality of how Mia and Sebastian both elevate each other artistically while also simultaneously slowly tearing apart the fabric of their relationship. Both Stone and Gosling truthfully display the trials and tribulations of showbiz along with the humiliation and self-doubt that comes with it.

La La Land is gorgeous to look at with its romantic lighting and vibrant color scheme. Director Damien Chazelle whimsically pans the camera around as the dazzling dance numbers are performed. Beautifully scored, the haunting piano music will gently ring in your ears long after the movie ends. The movie has an almost magical feel to it as it takes you back to a simpler time. Reminiscent of old Hollywood this is the type of film that will make you believe all your dreams can come true.
