A Ghost Story

A Ghost Story is a very somber artistic movie. The film is about a man, played by Casey Affleck, who dies in a car accident and returns to haunt his old home as a ghost watching over his widowed wife played by Rooney Mara. Throughout the years many people pass through his house, but he forever remains there, unable to let go of the past.

The film has very little dialogue. The characters interact by mostly staring and observing one another. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara perfectly portray the loneliness that their characters feel. Affleck greatly expresses the heart wrenching pain of being left behind by a loved one.

A Ghost Story is a slow hauntingly bleak film. Director David Lowery constantly uses still shots to create a feeling of emptiness. There are several shots of characters in solitude. The camera lingers on small spaces like hallways and doorways to engross the audience in the characters isolation. The movie leaves you wondering about how insignificant you are compared to the vastness of the universe and how you will eventually be forgotten.
